AI tool directories were a fairly obscure format until the pace of new tool launches outstripped what any single newsletter or subreddit could reasonably track.
The shift happened when discovery became the bottleneck, not tool quality. With thousands of overlapping products solving similar problems, the question stopped being “does a tool for this exist” and became “which of the twelve tools for this is actually worth trying.”
That’s the gap directories fill: not a replacement for reviews or word of mouth, but a structured starting point for narrowing a large, fast-moving field down to a shortlist.
